TIMELINE: FROM SAGCOT TO AGCOT


2010

The Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) is launched under the Kilimo Kwanza (Agriculture First) vision as a public-private partnership to transform agriculture in southern Tanzania.

January 2011

H.E. President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete presented the SAGCOT model at the World Economic Forum in Davos, which gained international recognition and support.

May 6, 2011

Prime Minister Hon. Mizengo Kayanza Pinda officially launched the SAGCOT Corridor in Dar es Salaam, and the SAGCOT Investment Blueprint (IBP) was unveiled.

Post-May 2011

The SAGCOT Centre Ltd. coordinates implementation across the government, private sector, civil society, and development partners.

By 2023

SAGCOT contributes over 65% of Tanzania’s food production, exceeding key 2030 targets. Regions including Mtwara, Central, and Northern Corridors push for model replication nationwide.

March 17, 2023

H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan launches the African Food Systems Platform in Dar es Salaam and establishes the Presidential Food and Agriculture Delivery Council, chaired by Hon. Mizengo Pinda. She directs the national expansion of the SAGCOT model to become AGCOT.

Post-March 2023

SAGCOT begins its transition into AGCOT (Agricultural Growth Corridors of Tanzania), extending the corridor approach to all major agro-ecological zones nationwide.

April 19, 2024

Hon. Hussein Bashe, Minister for Agriculture, leads the 3rd National Stakeholder Consultation on SAGCOT expansion. He endorses the AGCOT model, emphasizing cluster blueprints, commodity compacts, and national-level coordination.

April 27, 2025

AGCOT is officially launched in Dodoma by Prime Minister Hon. Kassim Majaliwa, marking a bold leap toward nationwide agricultural prosperity.

April 28, 2025

H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan visits the AGCOT Pavilion and is briefed by Hon. Hussein Bashe and AGCOT CEO Mr. Geoffrey Kirenga, reaffirming her 2023 directive to scale the model nationally.

April 30, 2025 (Present)

The AGCOT Centre officially replaces the SAGCOT Centre as the national coordination body.
