On February 21, 2025, Team Twiga from Tanzania clinched the top spot in the Action Learning Project (ALP) competition at AGRA’s CALA Cohort 3 graduation in Nairobi, outshining seven other country teams from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Uganda.

Guided by leaders such as Mary Kigalu (SAGCOT Centre Ltd.), Moses Kabogo (Lutheran World Relief), Samora Chacha (Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, Zanzibar), Abel Mtembei, PhD (Ministry of Agriculture), and Kobusinge Aloys, PhD (Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute), the team presented their impactful project titled “Private Enterprise Seaweed Value Addition (PESA) Project in Zanzibar.”

This initiative highlighted how strategic partnerships and limited resources can revolutionize the seaweed sector in Zanzibar, enhancing productivity, income, and value addition for smallholder farmers. By focusing on empowering women and youth, improving processing technologies, and expanding market access, the PESA Project stood out as a model for sustainable agricultural transformation.

Team Twiga’s success earned them the title of Best ALP, setting a benchmark for future cohorts and showcasing Tanzania’s leadership in innovative agrifood solutions.

Members of the Twiga cohort include:
Mary Kigalu : Cluster and Partnership Specialist, SAGCOT Centre Ltd.
Moses Kabogo : Country Director, Lutheran World Relief
Samora Chacha : Director of Planning, Policy and Research, Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, Zanzibar
Abel Mtembei, PhD : Principal Agricultural Officer, Ministry of Agriculture
